In sexual intercourse, the penis is inside the vagina and does not go any further, i.e. it does not enter the cervix or the uterus, so sexual intercourse in an uneventful pregnancy does not harm the baby. The baby is inside the uterus, behind the tight and long cervical canal, which is closed by a strong mucus plug. If the cervix, which separates the uterus from the vagina and prevents contact, is healthy and protects the baby, there is no problem.
In a pregnancy in which the check-ups are complete and everything is going well, your doctor will not impose restrictions on sex if he or she does not see any problems. Intercourse should not be too rough and should be controlled. Since the prostoglandin in semen can relax the cervix, it may be helpful to avoid ejaculation.
In which cases is intercourse not allowed during pregnancy?
- Placenta previa (when the placenta covers the cervix)
- Multiple pregnancy (intercourse is not recommended after 6 months in twin and above pregnancies)
- Cervical insufficiency (painless premature opening of the cervix)
- Threat of premature birth
- Threat of miscarriage
- Water coming in
Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, there are no restrictions on sex during pregnancy. There may be mild contractions in the uterus during orgasm, these are temporary and not dangerous. However, if the contractions do not pass, if the pain increases, the doctor should be informed in case of a contrary situation.
